What Makes a Good Cup of Coffee?

Coffee—it’s not just a drink; it’s a love affair for many of us. It’s the last thing you think about before you fall asleep and the first thing you think about when you wake up. Some people take it straight black, others can’t live without a splash of cream, while others add a touch of sweetness. Whether you’re a hardcore coffee connoisseur or just someone who enjoys the occasional cup, one thing’s for sure: COFFEE IS LIFE!

But as simple as it seems, a good cup of coffee can be elusive and quite subjective. Making a great cup of coffee is truly an art form with endless brewing techniques. Each method gives you something a little different—whether it’s a rich, bold espresso shot or a smooth, delicate pour-over.

As roasters, we are often asked about our coffee preferences and preferred brewing method. People are often surprised by our enjoyment of drip on most days, but we will occasionally break out the Ovalware Pour Over Kit, digital scale, and gooseneck kettle when we're wanting an exceptional morning coffee experience. It’s more than just throwing a spoonful of grounds into a machine and hitting "brew." A good cup of coffee is an experience, a symphony of complex flavors, aromatics, and fragrances.

So, let’s break it down, here are a few fundamentals to ensuring you have a good coffee experience every morning no matter the brewing method.

Freshness is Key: The Foundation of Flavor

Imagine biting into a stale cookie. Gross, right? The same goes for coffee. Fresh beans are the foundation of a good cup. Once roasted and ground, coffee starts to lose its flavor. To keep things tasty, always order whole bean and grind your beans just before brewing.

Beans: The Stars of the Show

In the world of coffee, the beans are the stars, and high-quality beans can elevate your cup. Whether you prefer smooth, complex arabica or the stronger, bolder robusta, your choice of beans will significantly impact your experience. If you're lucky enough to have a local roaster, I encourage you to have a conversation with them to learn more about the origin of their coffee selections.

The Perfect Brew Method: Find Your Style

Brewing coffee is all about technique, and each brewing method can create a different experience. Want to savor every drop? A pour-over lets you control the water flow for a delicate brew. Craving something strong? A French press gives you a full-bodied cup that packs a punch. Each brewing method results in a different coffee experience.

Water Temperature: Get It Just Right

Just like perfecting any recipe, coffee requires the right water temperature. Aim for between 195°F and 205°F to ensure optimal extraction. Too hot, and you risk scorching the delicate flavors; too cool, and your coffee will taste flat. Find that sweet spot, and your brew will be smooth and satisfying. Most drip coffee machines are set between 195°F to 205°F.

Flavors That Dance: A Taste Adventure

As in life, a good cup of coffee is all about balance. You want a touch of acidity to awaken your palate, a hint of sweetness that feels inviting, robust aromatics that embody the coffee's origin and processing, and a smooth mouthfeel that adds depth. From rich chocolate notes to hints of dried fruit and berries, coffees are diverse and offer an array of different taste profiles. I encourage you to find your origin!

The Final Ingredient: You, the Coffee Connoisseur

The best cup of coffee is the one that makes you feel good. Whether you enjoy it black, with a splash of cream, or sweetened to perfection, embrace your personal taste and let your coffee experience reflect your style.

On our next blog, we will dive deeper into brewing methods and coffee/water ratios that results in a good cup of coffee.

Happy brewing! ☕
